Our Origin and History
Our basic history and the origin of how we became New Day
Christian Community Church:
Formerly known as
MCC-Greenville (MCC-G) we began as a commissioned church of the
Universal Fellowship of
Metropolitan Community Churches (UFMCC). It was at this time known as one of
the churches in the UFMCC's Gulf Lower Atlantic District (GLAD). MCC-G was
started when a group of people gathered in the fall of 1981 to investigate
starting a church. The official date of certification by the UFMCC is January
31, 1982.
On
Easter Sunday, March 30, 1997, MCC-G moved to our own church building at
314 Lloyd Street in Greenville, South Carolina. The building had
been bought and then completely renovated by the members of the church under the
leadership of the Reverend Mick Hinson, who was the Pastor at MCC-G for six
years. The Reverend Marty Luna was our
pastor from November 1998 until July 2000.
Today we are known
as New Day Christian Community Church. New Day CCC withdrew from the
Universal Fellowship of
Metropolitan Community Churches (UFMCC) in July 2003 with a majority vote by
the membership. While UFMCC provided the needed structure and support in the
early days of the church, the restructuring of the denomination, the movement
away from common goals and mission and less local church autonomy led this body
of believers to appoint an ad hoc committee to study the benefits of remaining
in UFMCC.
By
recommendation of this committee a vote was taken and disaffiliation was the
result of the majority vote. The ad hoc committee continued its study of whether
to remain an independent church or whether to affiliate with another
denomination. Over the course of several months, other denominations were
examined and studied. Along with this study, the ad hoc committee took into
consideration the value of remaining an independent church.
A recommendation
was made to the Board of Directors of New Day CCC to affiliate with
International Christian
Community Churches (ICCC). The Board of Directors voted to accept the
committee's recommendations and to ask the congregation for a vote. On May 16,
2004 the congregation of New Day Christian Community Church voted on affiliation
with ICCC. By a majority vote, the congregation decided to affiliate with ICCC
and became an official member on July 11, 2004.
Experiencing
doctrinal and theological differences with ICCC, on August 16, 2009 New Day
voted to become and remains an independent Christian church.
