Pastor Steve Garrett is a native of Greenville, SC where he attended school. After graduation from high school, he attended Anderson College (a two-year institution at that time) and graduated in 1975 with a degree in Liberal Arts with a desire for a career in Christian education, music or mission work. During his time at Anderson College he discovered and came to terms with his sexuality and felt that a career with the Southern Baptist church was not likely to become reality. Taking a two-year break, he returned to school to major in Theatre Arts at The University of South Carolina. After attending for a year he realized that was not his calling. He left Greenville and lived in Atlanta, Georgia for a year and then the Tampa Bay area of Florida for 10 years. His secular job with a popular casual dining restaurant brought him back to South Carolina. He continued working in the restaurant/hotel industry and traveled the eastern seaboard with his career.

While living in Florida Pastor Steve discovered King of Peace MCC in St. Petersburg. Finally he found a church where he could once again join and become active. His transfer to Greenville and work schedule did not allow him to attend the local church on a regular basis, but his interest was still in seeking a safe place in which to worship. Eventually work schedules allowed attendance and joining the MCC in Greenville and he became actively involved. He has served the congregation in Greenville as treasurer of the Board of Directors, AIDS Outreach ministry leader and commissioned deacon. Inspired by the former pastors Rev. Marty Luna and Rev. Maria Wolfe, Pastor Steve began once again to consider his calling to the ministry. As a commissioned deacon, when a former pastor left the church, Pastor Steve offered to help with pastoral duties for three months during the transition and search for a new pastor. During this time the church expressed an intense interest to leave UFMCC. The church also called him as the pastoral leader to finish out the year 2003. Beginning January 1, 2004, Pastor Steve became the lay pastor of New Day Christian Community Church. The church voted to affiliate with International Christian Community Churches (ICCC), in May 2004 and Pastor Steve is currently seeking credentials and ordination through ICCC. He will soon complete the three-year educational program through ICCC's educational arm, The Emmaus Institute. Pastor Steve and his partner Tim Dommer live in Greer, SC with their six dogs. Tim is one of the church musicians and is the editor of the monthly newsletter. Both are looking forward to many years of working in ministry together.
